When communities plan new schools, housing, or public spaces, the people who will live with the results the longest are often the least represented: young people.
At Parity Forward, our approach to community development centers residents as a strategic asset, not an afterthought. That includes students. Communities with a voice in their own development are more stable and more economically productive, and that voice should include the next generation.
Education is social infrastructure
We tend to think of infrastructure as roads, pipes, and power lines. But schools, libraries, training centers, and youth spaces are infrastructure too. They shape where families choose to live, how local economies grow, and who gets access to opportunity.
Treating education and social infrastructure as part of community development, rather than a separate conversation, leads to better decisions about land use, housing, transportation, and public investment.
Why student engagement matters
Students bring a perspective adults can’t replicate. They know how they actually use space, how they get to school, what makes them feel safe, and what they want their community to become. Engaging them produces practical insight, and it does something more: it shows young people they have a stake in shaping the places they live.
Student engagement can also open doors to careers. When students participate in real design and planning work alongside professionals in architecture, engineering, and construction, they see pathways into fields they may never have considered.
What it looks like in practice
Our case study Building Pathways to Prosperity shows this approach in action: a Parity Solutions collaboration with Silver Creek Modular that put students at the center of conversations about the future of their educational environments, as contributors rather than spectators.
Designing with, not for
Equitable community development means designing with communities, not for them. For leaders, nonprofits, and institutions planning the future of a place, that starts with a simple question: who isn’t in the room yet? Very often, the answer is the students who will inherit what gets built.
